MCK offers condolences for former Kanehsatake Grand Chief

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to offer condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Kanehsatá:ke Grand Chief Hughie Nicholas, who passed away earlier this week.
He was first elected to Kanehsatá:ke Council in 1973. He then served as Kanehsatá:ke Grand Chief from 1977 to 1986.
“Hughie and I go back a long way,” said Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “He was Grand Chief of Kanehsatá:ke at a time of change in his community, and he was able to help Kanehsatá:ke move forward. On behalf of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, I’d like to offer our condolences to the entire community of Kanehsatá:ke in this time of mourning as he enters the spirit world.”
Mr. Nicholas will be buried at Pine Hill Cemetery following a service at the Oka United Church at 11am today.
