MCK offers condolences for former Kanehsatake Grand Chief

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke wishes to offer condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the late Kanehsat�:ke Grand Chief Hughie Nicholas, who passed away earlier this week.

He was first elected to Kanehsat�:ke Council in 1973. He then served as Kanehsat�:ke Grand Chief from 1977 to 1986. 

�Hughie and I go back a long way,� said Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. �He was Grand Chief of Kanehsat�:ke  at a time of change in his community, and he was able to help Kanehsat�:ke move forward. On behalf of the Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke, I�d like to offer our condolences to the entire community of Kanehsat�:ke in this time of mourning as he enters the spirit world.� 

Mr. Nicholas will be buried at Pine Hill Cemetery following a service at the Oka United Church at 11am today.
