Dates announced for Polling Station on Cannabis

10/17/2018

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the dates for a Polling Station to allow Kahnawa’kehró:non to have direct input on two questions regarding Cannabis have been set.

The Polling Station will be located at the Golden Age Club from Monday, October 22nd to Friday, October 26th.

The times are as follows:

  • Monday:         9am to 9pm
  • Tuesday:        9am to 4pm
  • Wednesday:   4pm to 9pm
  • Thursday:       9am to 4pm
  • Friday:           9am to 4pm
“As stated earlier, this poll is being conducted to gauge the community’s opinion on the sale of cannabis within the Territory,” said Ietsénhaienhs Rhonda Kirby, who is responsible for developing the legal framework for cannabis in the Territory. On behalf of the MCK. “Hopefully, this will provide us with a clear indication of the community’s thoughts on this matter.”

The poll will help Chief & Council determine whether any retail cannabis licenses should be issued in the Territory. The technical survey done in 2016 was not definitive in this matter and, following the First Hearing meeting on the proposed Law on September 25th, 2018, it was determined that there was a need to gauge the community’s support or disagreement with the retailing of cannabis within the Territory.
