Group Donates to Aid Language Students
04/17/2008
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to express gratitude to a group of people who graciously donated funds in the amount of $3300 dollars to buy badly needed resource materials for students of the Kanien’kéha Ratiwennahní:rats program.
With these funds, the Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa (KOR) Language and Cultural Center was able to purchase seventeen copies each, of the following books: Iakorihonnien:nis, by Josie Horne, A Mohawk Grammar by Nora Deering and the Niionkwarihó:ten Series. The total purchase price was $3247.00.
A student of the program sent a letter on February 17, 2008 to KOR Portfolio Chief Martin Leborgne, highlighting the need for the additional student books, the cost of which would have come out of the pockets of the students. However, this was not an official request to the MCK for additional funding. Rather, Chief Leborgne had volunteered to solicit donations on behalf of the students as portfolio Chief.
Please see the attached list of the names of those who contributed to this initiative.
The following is a list of the Kahnawa’kehró:non who graciously donated funds to purchase the resource materials mentioned in the above release:
Bully’s Truck Stop $800.00

Brian Goodleaf, Wayne Rice, Sterling Deer $1000.00
