Special Community Meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) for S-3 Indian Act amendments

12/11/2018

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to remind Kahnawa’kehró:non that a Special Community Meeting on the issue of Canada’s S-3 amendments to the Indian Act and its anticipated impacts on First Nations across the country is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) evening.

The meeting will take place from 7pm to 8:30pm at the Community Room located at the Peacekeepers station.

“We need to ensure as many people as possible become knowledgeable about S-3,” said Ietsénhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “We need to give Kahnawa’kehró:non opportunities to ask questions and give suggestions. Most important, we have to make sure we choose the right path in addressing this assimilation threat that Canada has thrust upon us.”

For those who cannot attend the meeting, or wish to speak on a one-to-one basis on this matter, the S-3 Working Group will be hosting a Kiosk from 9am to 4pm today at the Services Complex.

According to Canada’s own estimates, over a million new Status ‘Indians’ will be created based on the new criteria set out in the S-3 amendments. Of this, between 35,000 to 65,000 could be added to the Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke federal list.

Information on S-3 can be accessed at www.kahnawake.com/S3 .
