Water Shut-Offs to Begin
04/29/2008
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform community members who have not paid their annual Water & Sewer Maintenance Fee that Water Shut-offs will commence during the week of May 5-9, 2008.
“This is always a last resort”, said Director of Finance Marcy Delisle. “We do not take pleasure in shutting anyone’s water off. However, not many would pay otherwise. It costs approximately $620 per home in Kahnawà:ke to maintain everyone’s water and sewer, so $59 per year is certainly a bargain.”
Those living in rural areas that have not paid their maintenance fee will be responsible for the entire cost of repairs or re-installation of their water or septic system should a problem occur. The $59 fee for rural area homes is considered to be similar to an insurance plan.
To date, more than 400 persons have not paid their annual Water Fee and have been notified that their homes will be disconnected from the centralized system.
Payment can still be made at the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke main offices weekdays from 8:30am to 4pm. Credit and debit cards, cash, cheques and money orders are all accepted.
