KFB says stay fire-free this holiday season

12/18/2018

The Public Safety Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke and the Kahnawake Fire Brigade want you to have a safe holiday season. The following are some tips for Christmas Tree Fire Prevention:

  • Cut 5 cm from the trunk before placing it in the stand.
  • Water the tree every day.
  • Ensure lights are for indoor use only and are safe to use.
  • Place tree away from heat sources (candles, fireplace, wood stoves, heaters
  • Turn lights off before bed or when leaving your home
  • Don’t overload the light sockets (no more than three strands plugged into each other)
  • Take your tree down within four weeks of putting it up
  • Ensure your smoke alarms are working
The following video demonstrates how quickly a Christmas tree fire can become out of control and deadly.
