MCK to observe Parliamentary Hearings on ‘Contraband tobacco’
05/06/2008
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform the community that it will send observers to witness hearings on the sale of contraband tobacco that are taking place in Ottawa tomorrow (Wednesday).
Tobacco portfolio Chief Rhonda Kirby will attend on the MCK’s behalf.
“These hearings have been commissioned by Canada’s Public Security Minister Stockwell Day,” said Chief Kirby. “The removal of the topic of ‘contraband tobacco’ from the taxation framework to a new heading under Public Safety and National Security is something we need to keep a close eye on.”
Tomorrow’s participants in the hearings will include various government agencies such as the RCMP, Public Security, Canada’s border services, etc.
The hearings began on Monday, 5 Onerahtohkó:wa/May. Information on future meetings has not yet been released.
