Open invitation for Kahnawa’kehró:non to sit on Kahnawą:ke S-3 Defense Coalition

02/19/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) is inviting interested Kahnawa’kehró:non or Onkwehón:we residents of Kahnawą:ke to become a member on the Kahnawą:ke S-3 Defense Coalition (Coalition). The purpose of this new group is to empower Kahnawa’kehró:non to direct, create and send a Unified Community Position to the Federal Government of Canada on Bill S-3 amendments to the Indian Act.

The goal of the Unified Community Position is to express a non-partisan Kahnawą:ke position on Bill S-3. It is imperative that community members from all sectors of the community get involved in this grassroots group, as it will allow for diverse opinions and ideas, and will ultimately strengthen our community position.

To become a member on the Coalition, those 16 years of age or older can contact Jennifer McComber at the MCK Membership Department at 450-638-0500 or email Jennifer.mccomber@mck.ca, no later than March 15, 2019, at 4pm. The first meeting for the Kahnawą:ke S-3 Defense Coalition will take place on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at 7pm at the MCK Main Building.

Last year, the MCK appointed an internal working group to educate and inform the community about Bill S-3 and its impacts. Since November 2018, the Bill S-3 working group has consulted with hundreds of community members through kiosks, community organization presentations, open community meetings, radio talk shows, and more.

For Kahnawą:ke alone, the federal demographic projections of S-3 registrations could cause an increase of 35,000 to 65,000 persons to be affiliated with our community.
