03/27/2019
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce that the budget has been finalized for the fiscal year 2019/20 (April 1, 2019 - March 31, 2020). Chief and Council unanimously approved the budget of $52,607,647. Of note, $2.4 million will go into Appropriated Reserves, including a projected operating surplus of $1.3 million. The total budget increase for Fiscal 2020 is approximately $6.6 million.
Top-line revenues continue to grow, mainly from Mohawk Online and the payments from the sale of Continent 8 three years ago. Revenues from Mohawk Online are allocated to programs and services of a socio-economic nature that receive little to no funding from government sources.
"We have always stated that self-generated revenues will be the key to meeting the expanding needs of our growing community,” stated Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton. “We continue to move towards greater self-reliance, which will give us the flexibility to accomplish the goals that the community sets for itself.”
"We will continue to act in a fiscally responsible manner," said Ratsénhaienhs Michael Delisle, Jr., who is the Chairperson of the Finance, Administration & Operations Committee. “An important aspect of this budget is that we are in a position to appropriate significant monies into the Operational Reserves – something we haven’t been able to do in many years.”
“There is a need to invest in economic & regulatory development, infrastructure and housing" said Ietsénhaienhs Gina Deer, Lead Economic Portfolio Chief. “We will continue to explore additional revenue streams – we cannot assume that the current situation will remain the same. We must always plan for the future.”
The annual budget is always posted in both local newspapers and on kahnawake.com. The audited financial statements, including previous years, are available online at www.kahnawake.com/financials.
