Important Indian Day School Claims information

04/09/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that, in May 2019, the Federal Court will be asked to approve the proposed settlement for a Class Action Lawsuit against Canada to compensate survivors who attended federally-operated Indian Day Schools before the year 1988. The proposed settlement includes everyone who attended a federal Indian Day School.

There are forms available for individuals who wish to express their support or to object for this proposed settlement. These forms are available at the main MCK reception, or at the MCK Client-Based Services office located at the Services Complex. The deadline to submit these forms is Friday, May 3rd.

The court hearings on this matter will commence in mid-May 2019 at the Federal Court in Winnipeg. Individuals also have the right to address the court directly at the hearing should they wish to do so. Following the court decision, application forms for compensation will be made available.

Any person who feels that they may require emotional support during this time is encouraged to contact Kahnawake Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services Intake at 450-632-6880 or speak to Tom Dearhouse for further information.

For further information on the Indian Day School Settlement process, please contact Dennis Diabo ( dennis.diabo@mck.ca) or Katsistohkwi:io Jacco ( katsistohkwiio.jacco@mck.ca) at 450-632-7500.
