04/17/2019
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to inform the community that a Mohawk-Irish Language Scholarship has been created to facilitate a Mohawk Scholar from Kahnawà:ke to attend an Irish Language course in the community of An Cheathrú Rua each year, beginning this summer (2019).
The award was announced in Dublin, Ireland earlier today at a ceremony attended by Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton; Minister of State for the Gaeltacht, Sean Kyne, T.D.; and James Kelly, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ireland Canada University (the organization that will administer the Scholarship).

This Scholarship will enable a Mohawk Scholar to explore how the Irish language operates daily in a context in which the English language is also present – much like Kahnawà:ke, where Kanien’kéha is used in a similar manner.
“We are extremely pleased and excited by this historic initiative,” stated Grand Chief Norton. “This incredible opportunity will no doubt be a great step towards developing an ongoing friendship with the people of Ireland, with whom we share common ideals.”
An Cheathrú Rua, located in western Ireland, is well-known for its natural beauty, and famed for its traditional sailing boats and music. Notably, the Irish language is spoken there on a daily basis.
Details on eligibility, application processes and other criteria will be forthcoming shortly.
