New Grandstand for Hospital Ballfield

04/18/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce its support for a private initiative to improve the Hospital Ballfield.

Last week, Blitz Construction began fabrication of a new steel grandstand, which will have a walkthrough mezzanine. The construction was sponsored privately by Kahnawake Gas & Grocery, with MCK Recreation agreeing to invest approximately 30% of the total costs and maintain the bleachers upon completion. The mezzanine concrete will be sponsored by JFK Quarry. The existing wooden bleachers will remain.

The project also includes additional safety netting, and improvements to the field for spectators with mobility issues. The expected completion date is Wednesday, May 1st.

“We are grateful to all businesses and community members who partner with us to enhance our community’s recreational facilities, and I’d like to highlight that this project is a step towards making Kahnawà:ke’s public spaces accessible to all,” said Ratsénhaienhs Carl Horn. “Special thanks to Ryan Montour, Kahne McGregor and Kevin McComber for going the extra mile in coordinating this project, and to the team owners and sponsors of the Kahnawake Mixed Softball League for their continued support and stewardship of the Hospital Ballfield.”

Though a new baseball field is being built near the Kahnawà:ke Sports Complex, the field by the Hospital is still required for Minor Baseball (under 13 years) and softball. The Sports Complex field is for Bantam/Midget aged baseball players and will be bigger than the hospital field.
