MCK releases statement regarding Easter high-speed incident
04/22/2019
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to remind the community that great care must be taken in instances where crimes are committed within the Territory. On Sunday, April 21st, a dangerous situation arose when a high-speed chase took place in a residential area in the aftermath of an attempted fraud. While the situation ended with two suspects arrested and taken into custody, there was a very real possibility that innocent people walking along the street could be put at extreme risk. While all of us are pleased that two alleged criminals were captured, we must ALWAYS weigh the risks involved when community members take an active role in what is essentially a policing situation. We are truly fortunate that no civilians were hurt, as many people, especially children, were outdoors enjoying the beautiful weather.
The Peacekeepers always appreciate the assistance of Kahnawa’kehró:non when protecting the community. People can assist by taking photos or videos, installing cameras, and generally remaining as vigilant as possible at all times. In cases where a vehicle is involved, do not confront or stop the other vehicle but, rather, contact the Peacekeepers immediately with a clear description of the location and direction the vehicle is heading. It is never advisable to engage with persons who may have just committed a crime, as they may be armed and dangerous. In cases like these, it is essential that the Peacekeepers take the lead, for the protection and safety of everyone.
“In light of recent events, the MCK is aware that Kahnawa’kehró:non are upset or nervous regarding the security of the community,” said Ratsénhaienhs Frank McComber, who holds the Public Safety Portfolio. “We understand and share their concerns, as we are all in this together. There is an increasing need for vigilance. Any suspicious activity should be noted and reported to the Peacekeepers immediately. The Peacekeepers have the full support and confidence of the MCK in all matters related to policing. We shall work together with the entire community to ensure that safety and security remains a top priority for Kahnawà:ke.”
