05/22/2008
Grand Chief Michael Ahríhrhon Delisle, Jr. will meet with Quebec Special Envoy Geoff Kelley this morning at 10am. Mr.Kelly was appointed by Premier Jean Charest to begin the process of addressing outstanding issues between Kahnawà:ke and the province.
The latest situation is directly related to work that is set to commence on a section of the Highway 30 extension that will run through Seigneury of Sault St. Louis territory. On 9, Onerahtohkó:wa/May Chief Delisle sent a letter to the Premier that put the province on notice regarding the need to meet on several issues that need to be resolved.
“It’s a start,” said Chief Delisle. “The letter we sent last week was to get their attention because our other efforts don’t seem to get any results. We now have their attention!”
The Grand Chief said that Quebec needs to make commitments on several fronts.
“Quebec has the responsibility to genuinely address (our) issues in good faith, and to remediate Quebec’s questionable practices,” he said. “It’s time to seize the opportunity – our issue with Highway 30 is land. It’s ours and it needs to be recognized by the province.”
“Until then, Highway 30 can wait,” he added.
Today’s meeting is in Kahnawà:ke.
