The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the Council of Chiefs have unanimously passed a Mohawk Council Executive Directive to accept the Regulations Respecting the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law (“the Regulations”).

The Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law (“the Law”) was passed on July 3, 2018 through Mohawk Council Resolution 01/2018-2019. Following its passage, the Technical Drafting Committee created Regulations, 1) Respecting Hearings, 2) Applications for Recognition; 3) The Community Review Board; 4) The Custom Code; 5) The Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Commitment; 6) The Registrar and; 7) Confidentiality Agreements.

The purpose of the Regulations is to establish the rules and procedures to be followed by the Registrar verifying and deciding an application for recognition as a Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke.

“As stated in the Guiding Principles of the Regulations, the Registrar will respect the principles of fairness, dignity of the person, compassion, and consensus consistent with our traditions and customs,” said Ietsénhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “We now have a complete Law in place – it is the culmination of several years of work.”

Persons wishing to apply must do so at the Office of the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law, located within the MCK’s Client-Based Rervices Unit at the Services Complex. Information will be available on-site, and all questions will be answered.
