Meeting with Quebec Envoy “a good start”
05/22/2008
A two-hour meeting held earlier today between Grand Chief Michael Ahríhrhon Delisle, Jr. and Quebec’s special envoy Geoff Kelley has been deemed “a good start” by Chief Delisle.
Mr. Kelley, a former Quebec Native Affairs Minister and current Member of the National Assembly, was appointed to begin the process of addressing outstanding issues between Kahnawà:ke and the province.
“Our job is to ensure that these discussions continue,” said Chief Delisle. “I believe that there is some type of solution that could be reached in the next few weeks. I’m glad that Quebec took notice – that was the intent of the letter that was sent (on 9, Onerahtohkó:wa/May).”
According to Chief Delisle, the majority of this preliminary meeting was spent discussing the issues of the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis and Highway 30.
The two pledged to continue the dialogue by telephone within the next few days. More meetings are being planned.
