Application forms for Kahnawake Kanienkehaka Registry available today
06/24/2019
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that persons who wish to apply to be formally recognized as Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke on the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry may do so beginning today at the Office of the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry (formerly the Membership Office), located at the Services Complex.
The Application processes had been on hold for several years while the former Kahnawà:ke Membership Law was being amended, with its name changed to the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law (“the KKL”). While the KKL was passed on July 3, 2018, Regulations needed to be created to properly administer the law.
“The passage of the KKL’s Regulations last week finally opens the door to a significant number of people who have not be able to apply since the Council of Elders was suspended in 2007,” said Ietsénhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer. “There were legal reasons for this, as we’ve stated many times in the past. We finally have the mechanism to allow for these new applications, which should be a relief for people who have been waiting, in many cases, for over ten years.”
Application forms are now available during regular business hours. Assistance will be provided by staff members. The requirements for eligibility are listed in the KKL, which can be found online at www.kahnawakemakingdecisions.com .More information on the processes and requirements are forthcoming.
Please note that, while applications are being accepted, the verification and validation process is expected to begin in late summer/early fall.
