The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that Ietsénhaienhs Gina Deer is attending festivities taking place today at Val David to celebrate the diversity of people living within the MRC des Laurentides region.
“We were invited because we do a lot of work with the people in the region, particularly those who have been resisting the plan to clear cut some of the forests up here,” said Ietsénhaienhs Deer. “In particular, we share the concern regarding the threat to the forest on Mt. Kaaikop would have a detrimental impact on Tioweró:ton.”
“I’m using this opportunity to maintain our relationships, perhaps create some new ones, and stay abreast of developments on the logging situation,” she continued. “We’ve been working with several groups in the area, particularly our neighbors in the town of Ste. Lucie. They have made a great point of acknowledging and respecting our presence in the area, so we felt it was important to be part of their event today.”
