MCK issues ‘Sixties Scoop’ deadline reminder
06/28/2019
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the deadline regarding the ‘Sixties Scoop’ settlement is Friday, August 30, 2019.
Collectiva, the claims administrator, says it has reached a significant number of people who fit the eligibility criteria for compensation.
For those who haven’t been contacted, there is still time to apply. The MCK is advising persons who may be eligible to contact Collectiva or visit their website as soon as possible if they haven’t already done so.
The settlement agreement was reached in 2017 in respect to a class action lawsuit aimed at compensating “any registered Indian or person eligible to be registered or Inuit person who was adopted or made a permanent ward and was placed in the care of non-Indigenous foster or adoptive parents in Canada between January 1951 and December 31, 1991, resulting in the loss of cultural identity. Eligible class members will receive compensation between $25,000 and $50,000 depending on the overall number of eligible members.”

Please note that the MCK is passing along this information as it may affect some people in the community and is not directly involved in the settlement and is not responsible to ensure applications for the settlement.
