Recreation Bay Restoration to begin Fall 2019

07/24/2019

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) is pleased to inform the community that implementation of the Recreation Bay Restoration Project will begin in the Fall of 2019.

The goal of the project is to enhance the area for the community and the environment. Since 2008, KEPO has carried out studies to understand the nature of the problems in the Bay and has worked with experts to model and design long-lasting solutions. The work will improve the water flow through the bay and naturalize portions of the island and the shoreline.

“Fixing Recreation Bay has been a priority for community members and Chief and Council, and we now have a good plan and funding from external sources to move forward with the work," said Environment Portfolio Chief Clinton Phillips. "Once completed, canoeing, fishing, and swimming will all be improved, while also helping the natural environment.”

“We ask community members to bear with us as the work proceeds," continued Phillips. "There will be some disruption of activities on the island, but we believe that the result will be well worth it, and I am personally very excited to see this project move forward.”

KEPO will be communicating with the community on a regular basis, and a staff member will be on-site throughout this process to limit the disruption as much as possible. Implementation activities will begin this fall and continue throughout the spring, summer, and fall of 2020.

If you have any information to share or would like to know more about the project, please contact the Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office at 450-635-0600
