MCK seeking input from Kahnawa’kehró:non

07/26/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) wishes to advise Kahnawa’kehró:non that the MCK will be participating in a study to investigate and identify solutions to flooding on Lake Champlain and the Richelieu River Basin.

As stakeholders, the MCK will be working with the Abanaki community of Wolinak, to identify areas where traditional land-use-activities have been or continue to occur in the study area. Stakeholders must be consulted to ensure their interests are considered.

The MCK is requesting input from Kahnawa’kehró:non for information on any traditional activities that they may have been, or continue to carry out, in and around Lake Champlain and the Richelieu River. Traditional activities include hunting, fishing, camping, and harvesting of other resources. This would include identifying any culturally important or sensitive sites (e.g. burial or ceremonial sites).

The purpose of gathering this information is to identify and ensure that areas of interest to First Nations are not damaged or eroded by any flooding control measures taken as a result of this study.

If you wish to provide any information, or have any questions concerning this study, please email feedback@mck.ca or call MCK Technicians Dennis Diabo or Trina C. Diabo at 450-632-7500.
