MCK announces plans on removing pipe fragments
08/02/2019
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to inform the community that a special committee has been established to ensure the safe removal of pipe fragments containing encased asbestos in mostly undeveloped lots of SLS 106.
The MCK would like to assure the community that the soil itself is not contaminated. However, the MCK is taking extra precautions to ensure the safe removal of the fragments by also removing the soil. The work will begin on Tuesday, August 6th. The soil and fragments will be transported to another location, away from any residential areas. At a later date, the fragments will be safely disposed of.
Phase One will involve the removal of up to ten (10) lots where people plan to build or are building and includes the Six Plex.
"We don’t have all the information yet, so we can’t put a timeline on how long this will take but we can take action on these lots immediately," said Ratsénhaienhs Frankie McComber, who is leading the committee. “This is top priority. We won’t stop until the affected soil is removed and replaced with clean soil.”
Residents in the area will receive more information delivered to their door and a special meeting with residents will take place at the end of August.
Please note that community members can send inquiries to AsbestosInfo@mck.ca.
