Decisions on Kahnawake Kahnienkehaka Registry applications to begin for first time since 2007

08/30/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce that the registrar is ready to begin making decisions on applications for recognition on the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry (KKR).

This will be the first time that applications will be fully processed since the suspension of the Council of Elders in 2007. Since that time major amendments to the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law (formerly the Kahnawà:ke Membership Law) were completed in 2018.

Persons who have applied for recognition from 2007 onward have been contacted and provided with the new application forms, which have been available since 24, Ohiarí:ha/June. Currently, there are over 50 applications to be processed. Those wishing to apply should do so by contacting the KKR Office (see below).

“The process does take some time but after years of work we’re finally moving forward,” said Melanie Gilbert, Registrar of the KKR. “With the enactment of the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law and the related Kahnawà:ke Residency Law – and the subsequent acceptance of the Regulations attached to the laws – we now have the tools in place to proceed properly. We appreciate the patience people have shown as we have collectively undergone this long, difficult and important process.”

Anyone with questions should visit or contact the KKR Office (formerly the Membership Office) located at the Services Complex during regular business hours. The phone number is 450-638-0500.
