Local Tree Inventory Wednesday & Thursday
09/03/2019
The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) wishes to inform the community of environmental fieldwork occurring in the Territory to inventory local trees. Work is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 4th, and Thursday, September 5th, weather permitting.
Specialists from the National Tree Seed Centre (NTSC) of Natural Resources Canada will be in Kahnawą:ke to collect samples from local tree populations as part of a pilot project to combat illegal logging on a global scale. Samples from Kahnawą:ke will be used as reference samples to test new techniques to catalog trees.
The same team will also be assessing ash trees to collect ash seeds this fall to store in a seed bank, managed by KEPO. The Emerald Ash Borer is currently destroying the ash population within most of its North American range, and this initiative will help restore an Ash population at some point in the future.
The trees in question are mainly on common land, and NTSC specialists will be accompanied by KEPO staff at all times.
Please contact the Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office at 450-635-0600 or environment.protection@mck.ca for more information.
