Emergency Location Mapping system launches October 10th
09/10/2019
The Kahnawake Public Safety Commission, Kahnawake Peacekeepers, and Kahnawake Fire Brigade are pleased to announce that Thursday, October 10, 2019, will be the official launch date for the Emergency Location Mapping system. Effective October 10th, community members can add their emergency location when calling the Kahnawake Peacekeepers (450-632-6505) for any emergency service (fire, ambulance, police). By using the emergency location, the response time should decrease. Kylene Standup will be delivering emergency location addresses door-to-door to each home in Kahnawake, beginning this week. Each home will receive an envelope with their emergency location address as well as stickers and fridge magnets to display their address in their home. To verify your location, you can call Public Safety at 450-632-0635 or stop in at the MCK Public Relations Office, located in the red building next to McComber’s Convenience on River Road. Please do not call the Peacekeepers or Fire Brigade to find out what your emergency location is.
While many roads had commonly known names such as ‘River Road,’ ‘Old Malone Highway,’ etc., not every road had a name. Additionally, multiple roads had the same name. All such roads were re-named, often using Kanien’kéha words. No names of persons were used, though many English last names of families or English nicknames may have been commonly known street names and remained. “Despite the new system and launch date, if people do not know their emergency location address, we will still use the old method to find you,” said Jody Diabo.
Testing of the system has taken place between June and August 2019. The entire system will be for emergency personnel only and not shared with any outside agencies.
