Old Courthouse to be demolished

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw�:ke (MCK) Asset Management Unit would like to inform all Kahnawa�kehr�:non of the demolition of the Old Courthouse, located on the Old Malone highway next to the Kahnaw�:ke Labor Office.

This building was tested, and, like many older buildings, the results show that it does include Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) within the building�s plaster.

People are asked to keep away from the cordoned-off area during the demolition phase.

MCK Asset Management has hired Panzini Demolition, which has the necessary expertise in demolition that includes ACM. The company will follow proper federal, provincial, and local procedures for its removal, which will be taken off the territory.

The demolition will include most of the foundation, though a small portion will be retained to maintain the stability of a nearby private lot.

The start date of the demolition is not yet known, though the work is expected to be completed by mid-November.
