Proposed Occupational Safety and Health law receives Mandate, Scope and Purpose, to move forward in CDMP

11/13/2019

The Kahnaw:ke Legislative Coordinating Commission (KLCC) would like to advise the community that the proposed Kahnaw:ke Occupational Safety & Health Law has received its Mandate, Scope and Purpose from Chief & Council and will now proceed to the Community Decision Making Process.

Additionally, the proposed legislation has been categorized as a Type II Non-Urgent. The revised submission request by the Kahnaw:ke Labor Office was received by the KLCC on June 18, 2019. The above decisions were passed by consensus at yesterdays duly-convened Council Meeting.

According to the proponents, the Kahnaw:ke Occupational Safety & Health Law will enhance the well-being of community members as the average Kahnawakehr:non will have access to a complete Health and Safety program for each worker, including ensuring the livelihood of the spouse and children in the event of an on-the-job accident or injury.

The Kahnaw:ke Labor Office will embark on an information campaign in order for community to understand the rationale for creating this Law before the feedback process begins.
