Indian Day Schools Settlement delayed

11/20/2019

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that the nation-wide class action settlement to compensate survivors for harms suffered while attending Federal Indian Day Schools has been delayed due to a court challenge received by Gowling WPG, acting as Class Counsel.

The opening of the claims process, which was scheduled to begin on December 19, 2019, is delayed while the challenge is being processed. It is unknown at this time how long this will take.

Survivors will be able to apply for compensation of between $10,000 to $200,000 based on the level of harm experienced and other factors. Application for claims for compensation is not yet finalized or available. Information will be forthcoming once the application forms are available.

The MCK created a webpage (www.kahnawake.com/indiandayschool) to assist community members who need any information on this matter, correct contact information, websites and more.

Upcoming information sessions in Kahnawą:ke regarding the class action settlement are planned in the future, though no dates have been set at this time.
