Chief Sends Letters on Day of Action
05/29/2008
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke announced today that it is sending letters to the mayors of nine (9) surrounding municipalities to advise them of the on-going nature of the Seigneury of Sault St. Louis land grievance.
“Twenty years ago, in 1988, Chief & Council sent advisories to the neighboring communities on this issue,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhrhon Delisle, Jr. “I’m sure that there are very few politicians and administrators from that era who are still around today, so these letters are a reminder that we are still pursuing and safeguarding our interests as vigorously as ever.”
As well, letters are being sent to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day in regard to the recent plan announced by Mr. Day and the RCMP to battle ‘contraband tobacco.’ The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is particularly upset that the plan criminalizes not only the native tobacco industry but the Mohawk people as a collective. Additionally, no one from either the federal government or the RCMP has bothered to contact the MCK to discuss the issue.
The letters are symbolically being sent today on the National Day of Action. No other actions are being contemplated at this time by the MCK.
