Illegal Dumping in Kahnawake

12/12/2019

The Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) would like to inform the community of an increase in illegal dumping along the Highway 207 corridor, Tower Line Road and the Seaway Road in recent months.

Staff from KEPO and the Public Safety Unit have responded to a series of reports from community members regarding this activity. There are many similarities among the dump locations and materials and it is suspected that one individual is responsible for multiple incidents.

This is a disappointing and disheartening development, said Ratsnhaienhs Cody Diabo, the new Lead on the Environment Portfolio for the MCK. There is a financial cost to cleaning up this mess, but the real issue is the lack of respect for Mother Earth. It is our responsibility to ensure we each do our part on behalf of the collective, so if anyone sees any such unacceptable and illegal activity taking place, call the Peacekeepers immediately.

KEPO encourages all Kahnawakehr:non to remain vigilant for any illegal dumping activities and to call the Kahnaw:ke Peacekeepers (450-632-6505) immediately if you witness any such activities taking place.

For more information, please contact the Kahnaw:ke Environment Protection Office at 450-635-0600.
