Public Safety unveils changes
03/10/2020
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to announce several changes that have either taken place, are underway or being planned for the future. These changes are part of the new Mandate approved by Chief & Council at the duly-convened Council meeting on January 20, 2020.
Most notably, the former Public Safety Unit is now the Public Safety Division of the MCK. Other changes are as follows:
- Animal Control Services (formerly Animal Protection)
- Public Health Inspectors (formerly Safety & Health Inspectors)
- Comprehensive Emergency Management (formerly EPP*)
- Landfill Services & Inspection (formerly Landfill Office, under the direction of the Lands Unit)
- Search & Rescue (operational, received official mandate)
- Community Supervision (operational, received official mandate)
- New: Enforcement Management (new service in developmental stage)
The Public Safety Commission mandate has also been updated. The new mandate, which was finalized in December, will ensure key public safety stakeholders are directly involved with global public safety issues, will provide direction, and work in a collaborative manner.
“As the community grows, so do its needs,” said Commissioner of Public Safety Lloyd Phillips. “The changes that have been made reflect the need to expand services and to improve our efficiency and cooperation. What is most important is having the tools needed to properly and effectively address the needs of our community. This helps provide that direction.”
