The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the community that Sanexen Environmental Services, Inc. will be in Kahnawà:ke on Thursday, March 12th to conduct soil sampling on the soil stockpiles located on Route 207, near the St. Kateri Cemetery.
The site contains several piles of soils mixed with waste asbestos-cement piping. The volume of soils to be sampled is approximately 2800 cubic meters. This assessment is required to determine the appropriate disposal facility.
“We will be removing the affected soil from the area,” said Ratsénhaienhs Frankie McComber, who is the lead on the Public Safety portfolio. “The testing and removal will be done according to all the proper requirements. We need to do this right.”
A backhoe or excavator will be required to facilitate sampling. Local contractor Wishe Bush Construction has been retained for this purpose.
“The issue of waste asbestos-cement pipes has been very troubling and frustrating,” Ratsénhaienhs McComber concluded. “We are continuing to address the problem. I can tell you that we are going to ensure that something like this doesn’t happen again.”
