Total Fire Ban in Effect

04/06/2020

The Kahnawà:ke COVID-19 Task Force wishes to advise the community that a total ban of outdoor fires of any kind is now in effect.

This directive comes from the Task Force on behest of the Kahnawake Fire Brigade (KFB), who is warning that the fire danger for our region is presently “HIGH.” Due to the current situation, the ban is also extended to Tioweró:ton, effective immediately.

Taking into consideration the COVID-19 virus, the KFB does not want to expose Firefighters to unnecessary risks by gathering to fight fires caused by negligence or by accident.

“This ban would have been done regardless of COVID-19,” said Fire Chief David Scott. “We have been getting calls at fire station all weekend asking if bonfires are acceptable. The answer is simple: they are not.”

Fines will be issued to anyone starting a fire of any kind by either the Kahnawà:ke Peacekeepers or the KFB. Please note that, because the directive is coming from the COVID-19 Task Force, the fines can be larger than the usual amounts.
