Update on Fire Ban
04/07/2020
The COVID-19 Task Force has received multiple notices of concern about the total fire ban issued yesterday. Several of those who contacted the Task Force wished to offer a reminder that fire is part of the culture and could be a healthy manner to deal with the current stress.
Therefore, in consultation with the Kahnawake Fire Brigade and the Kahnawake Peacekeepers, the following are the adjusted directives:
- The TOTAL BAN on the grass, rubbish (garbage), and large bonfires will continue.
- The TOTAL BAN on fires in Tioweró:ton will continue
It has been determined that SMALL campfires will be permitted if the following conditions are met: - The ideal situation is that fire is made in an appropriate fire-resistant device.
- If a fire is made outside a device, it will be in a fire pit no larger than three feet by three feet and ensure that it is partially enclosed (steel rim, rocks, cement blocks, etc.) similar to that found in a campground.
- Proper extinguishing agent be readily available and nearby
- The participants respect the ‘SAME HOUSEHOLD’ rule. (no friends or neighbors, only people who live in said house)
Your cooperation is greatly appreciated during this COVID-19 pandemic.
