Tioweroton Cabin Construction Application Process amended
05/08/2020
The Lands Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that the cabin construction application process in the 2004/2005 Tioweró:ton Policy has been amended and replaced with the Tioweró:ton Cabin Development and Ownership Procedures.
The new procedure will require the applicant to complete a 30-day communal posting and be approved prior to selecting a cabin construction site, similar to the Land Allotment Procedures. The 30-day communal posting will also apply to cabin sales/purchases. The new procedures prevent any cabin owners who have sold their cabin to acquire a new cabin construction site.
The reasoning for the change was to close loopholes, have consistency in Policy application (similar to land allotment process), and for transparency (communal postings). Additionally, the previous Policy was drafted in 2004-2005, and this portion needed to be updated. The rest of the Policy remains. The Tioweró:ton Development and Cabin Ownership Procedures are available for viewing at www.kahnawake.com/tioweroton . As the Lands Unit offices are currently closed to the public, community members should call 450-638-8244 should they have any questions regarding the Procedures. If there is no answer, leave a message, and your call will be returned in a timely manner. At this time, only emergency repairs are permitted by a local contractor who exercises COVID-19 Task Force physical distancing and sanitization measures. Non-local contractors or deliveries are not permitted in the Tioweró:ton Territory. New construction by a local contractor is not permitted. However, people can build their own cabins, provided they follow the same measures mentioned above.
