KEPO pre-construction activities on Tekakwitha Island
05/19/2020
The Kahnawake Environment Protection Office (KEPO) would like to inform the community of pre-construction activities taking place on Tekakwitha Island and in the Bay during the week of May 18th in preparation for the restoration efforts scheduled for this summer. The contractor, Rice Mohawk Landscaping (RML), will be staking out some of the work areas on Tekakwitha Island throughout the week. This work involves two staff members, including one external to the community.
A meeting on-site with RML’s external biologist will also take place during the week.
Finally, a survey of the Bay will be completed to assess the depth of sediment. This is necessary to accurately measure the volume of sediment that will be removed through the project and must take place prior to the growth of aquatic plants in the Bay. Two external staff working with KEPO’s consultant will undertake this work on May 22nd, weather permitting. A KEPO staff member will be present on-shore to oversee the operation.
KEPO has been working to ensure that restoration activities are ready to begin as soon as safely possible and we have been coordinating activities with the COVID-19 task force to ensure compliance as we proceed with this essential project. Appropriate distancing measures and other COVID-19 precautions will be followed.
