Tennis Courts to open June 19th
06/16/2020
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) Recreation Department is pleased with the Kahnawake Covid-19 Task Force directive that outdoor fitness classes and tennis are now allowed to resume. This directive will allow for the opening of Kahnawake′s first tennis court this Friday, June 19, 2020 at 12 noon.
Located at the Kahnawake Sports Complex, the multi-purpose tennis/volleyball court was built thanks to a generous donation from Onkwata’karitáhtshera, Kahnawà:ke’s ‘One Health’ agency. The organization contributed to this project to introduce new alternative healthy activities to the Community as part of their mandate.
Construction was completed in Fall 2019 but, due to weather and then COVID-19, the court had yet to be open to the public. MCK Recreation had activities planned the officially opening but, due to the current circumstances (especially social distancing concerns), those activities will not take place this year and equipment rentals will not be available as originally planned.
At this time the directive is for singles tennis only. This means that each court is limited to a maximum of two players and an aide/instructor. The only equipment needed is tennis racquets and a tennis ball. It is highly recommended that you continue hand hygiene precautions as you play, disinfect any equipment before playing, and refrain from shaking hands.
The courts will be open from 8am to 8pm daily. Please note that no volleyball will be permitted at this time due to the ongoing pandemic.
"We are very excited to open this multi-purpose tennis/volleyball court to the community,” said Mackenzie Whyte, General Manager of MCK Recreation. "We need variety for our health and fitness. While there are other indoor facilities for volleyball, it is our hope that individuals take advantage of the first opportunity to experience the great game of tennis right here in town. There are many opportunities and scholarships available for players and, hopefully, we can produce both competitive athletes as well as recreational players from this initiative.”
“We’d like to thank Onkwata’karitáhtshera for contributing towards new healthy activities for everyone to enjoy," she concluded.
