Kahnawake Fire Brigade issues new EXTREME Fire Risk notice

The Kahnaw�:ke Fire Brigade (KFB) is advising the community that the risk of fire in both Kahnaw�:ke and Tiower�:ton has been elevated to extreme. Due to the high temperatures and dry conditions we are experiencing, conditions bring a severe risk of fire should care not been taken.

Effective immediately, the use of fireworks of any kind is prohibited. This includes �flying lanterns.� Additionally, the burning of brush and debris should not be taking place at this time.

�As I stated the previous time we issued an extreme fire risk notice, the KFB is asking community members to use caution when having small campfires which, for the time being, are still permitted in Kahnaw�:ke,� said Fire Chief David Scott. �Of course, all the necessary precautions should be taken, such as having a garden hose or fire extinguisher on hand. No fire should ever be left unattended.�

�The situation in Tiower�:ton is even more serious because of the nature of the Territory � which consists almost entirely of forest � and the lack of firefighting equipment on hand,� he continued. �Therefore, a complete ban of any type of outdoor fire is in effect immediately in Tiower�:ton. We trust that everyone understands the rationale for this directive and will act accordingly. We have to all work together to protect our Territory from a potential disaster.�
