Kahnawake Fire Brigade issues High Fire Risk notice

07/08/2020

The Kahnawà:ke Fire Brigade announced that the risk of fire in both Kahnawake and Tioweró:ton is elevated to High.

Therefore, effective immediately, the use of fireworks of any kind is prohibited, as are flying lanterns. Additionally, the burning of debris and brush should not be taking place during this time.

“The forecast for the coming days will most probably require an Extreme rating change very soon.” said Fire Chief David Scott.

“We have also been receiving reports of fireworks being set off over the course of the last few weeks. I can’t stress enough the danger this represents to residences and the forests.”

Community members are reminded that the situation in Tioweró:ton is a cause for greater concern because of the nature of the Territory – which consists almost entirely of forest – and the lack of firefighting equipment on hand.
