State of Emergency extended to August 21st
07/09/2020
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke wishes to inform the community that the current State of Emergency was formally extended at the duly-convened Council meeting held yesterday (8, Ohiarihkó:wa/July 2020). The Mohawk Council Resolution, which was passed by consensus, also includes the extension of the Mandate for the COVID-19 Task Force.
The extension was requested by the Task Force based the current negative events affecting communities surrounding Kahnawą:ke. The extension will allow the Task Force to continue its work to address the pandemic.
The original Declaration of State of Emergency was ratified on 21, Onerahtókha/April 2020. By law, the State of Emergency must be renewed on a monthly basis. The current extension expires on 21, Ohiarihkó:wa/July but, because there are no duly-convened Council meetings scheduled for the next two weeks, the further extension was passed yesterday. This extension will expire on 21, Seskéha/August 2020.
The Declaration of Emergency was taken to ensure the protection of Kahnawą:kes jurisdiction during the current pandemic. It allows for changes to various public safety laws required to ensure the next phases of the pandemic are addressed on a timely basis.
