Chiefs in Ottawa for Tobacco Meeting

07/29/2008

Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke Chiefs Rhonda Kirby and Peggy Mayo are in Ottawa today to attend a meeting on tobacco.

They will be meeting with other Native leaders as well as Member of Parliament Dave Mackenzie, Parliamentary Secretary to Minister Responsible for Public Safety Stockwell Day.

“This informal session is a direct result of our presentation to the Public Safety Standing Committee on Contraband Tobacco back in June,” said Chief Kirby. “This idea of an informal session was proposed by Mr. Mackenzie as a way to discuss the issue of tobacco and to share mutual concerns surrounding the tobacco industry,” she added.

The informal meeting takes place in Ottawa later this morning on Parliament Hill.
