DANGER – SWIMMING AT TEKAKWITHA ISLAND BRIDGE
08/14/2020
The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to remind the community of the dangers associated with swimming at the Tekakwitha Island bridge (“the bridge”).
The Seaway is a no-swim zone as a result of the dangers of freighters passing through the channel. Due to the proximity of the bridge to the Seaway, it is a swim at-your-own-risk area.
Large freighters create strong current “pulls” when passing and are strong enough to draw objects (and swimmers) under water towards the vessel. These freighters also cannot stop as easily like pleasure crafts due to their size and weight.
Evacuating the water when a freighter passes is the best way to reduce the risk of an accident. Parents are asked to please supervise and educate their children on open water safety.
Enjoy the tail end of the summer swimming season in a safe and enjoyable manner.
If you have any questions or for more information please call the Public Safety Unit Division at 450-632-0635.
