Funeral for Grand Chief Norton to take place on Wednesday

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to advise the public that the funeral for Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro will take place on Wednesday, August 19th in Kahnawà:ke. The event will proceed at 10am with a number of speakers paying tribute to Mr. Norton. Among the speakers will be Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador Ghislain Picard, and Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Indigenous Services. This will be followed immediately by a Traditional service at precisely 11am.

Grand Chief Norton passed away on Friday evening at the age of 70. He was first elected to Council in 1978. From 1982 until retiring in 2004 he held the position of Grand Chief. He was successful in his return to politics and was elected as Grand Chief once again in 2015. He was reelected in 2018 and was serving in that capacity at the time of his passing.

The family will receive condolences at the Kahnawà:ke Sports Complex beginning today at 12 noon until 5pm, then again from 6pm – 9pm. On Tuesday, visitation will be from 9am – 12 noon, 1pm – 5pm, and 6pm – 9pm.

The family wishes to remind all planning to attend that they must wear face masks and observe social distancing.
