Wednesday Tribute to Grand Chief Norton to be available for viewing on Facebook

08/18/2020

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to advise the public that those wishing to view tomorrow’s (Wednesday’s) tribute speeches for the late Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton will be able to do so on Facebook at the ‘In Memory of Grand Chief Joseph Tokwiro Norton’ page later in the day.

The tribute speeches will begin at 10am and conclude at 11am, at which time the Traditional funeral service will begin. The speeches will be recorded and posted on Facebook, as indicated above. There will be absolutely no recording of the funeral service, as this is strictly prohibited.

Among those scheduled to speak are former Ietsénhaienhs (Council Chief) Peggy Mayo-Standup, Minister of Indigenous Services Canada Marc Miller, Regional Chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec-Labrador Ghislain Picard, and current Ratsénhaienhs (Council Chief) Ross Montour.

Grand Chief Norton began his political career in 1978. He served as Kahnawà:ke’s Grand Chief from 1982 to 2004, and from 2015. He was in his second term since returning to office when he passed away suddenly at the age of 70.
