Cannabis Regulations Survey results released
09/04/2020
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that the results of the recent Cannabis Regulations survey are now available. The survey, which was conducted both on-line and via telephone interviews from late July to early August, was used to gauge opinions on various aspects of the Regulations such as location, number of permits, consultation and products. Overall there were 370 participants, with 204 random telephone surveys conducted by an independent contractor, and 166 surveys completed online.
The results of the survey can be accessed here.
“The survey will assist the Cannabis Control Board in drafting regulations that will balance the interests and concerns of the community,” said Ietsénhaienhs Tonya Perron, who is the Lead on the Cannabis file. “The eventual enactment of the Regulations will provide the mechanism for the full implementation of the Kahnawà:ke Cannabis Control Law and allow for an effectively regulated industry within the Territory.”
The Kahnawà:ke Cannabis Control Law was enacted on December 12, 2018. The law was created as an assertion of Mohawk jurisdiction in response to Canada’s decision to legalize recreational cannabis in October of that year. The main focuses of the law are to protect the health and safety of the community, protecting the youth by restricting their access and exposure to cannabis and cannabis by-products, and to deter illicit and illegal activities in relation to cannabis on the Territory while, at the same time, ensuring a viable and responsible economic opportunity with tangible, measurable economic benefits to the community
