Aquaponics Survey results released
09/24/2020
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community of the results of the survey conducted on the Aquaponics projects that was conducted from late August to early September. The Aquaponics project is an ambitious environmentally-friendly sustainable foods initiative that was announced earlier this year.
The survey consisted of a series of questions on certain aspects of the food industry.
“We were pleased by the excellent feedback we received,” said Ratsénhaienhs Cody Diabo, who is the lead on the Aquaponics project. “The information we gathered will be used for the feasibility study that will be the next step necessary for the project to move forward.”
“Overall it seems a vast portion of the community is in support of this type of project,” he continued. “Of those who did the survey online, 73% supported the project while those who participated in the phone survey supported the project at 87%, which is very encouraging. In the meantime, we will answer some of the questions that came up and will ensure that the community continues to be informed on a timely basis. For clarity, we are still in the preliminary phases, and nothing has been decided at this time.”
“It is important for me to tell Kahnawa’kehró:non that this is a community project for the community, with the ultimate goal of making sure that our people know where our food is coming from,” Ratsénhaienhs Diabo concluded. “The food will be grown and harvested by community members, which is very important because local employment will be one of the benchmarks of the project’s success.”
The survey results can be accessed here.
