Message from the Task Force

09/28/2020

The Kahnawà:ke COVID-19 Task Force and the Kateri Memorial Hospital Centre (KMHC) would like to advise the community that we are aware of the positive case in the community. Our Kahnawake Public Health Team (located at KMHC) has been in contact with the family and has provided medical guidance to the contacts of the positive case. If you have not received a call from the KMHC Public Health Team, then you are not at risk and there are no actions for you to take at this time.

The Task Force and the Testing Site have received numerous phone calls from concerned community members about what actions they should take.  Please be advised that testing results are confidential. Contact tracing involves significant training and medical expertise and is the responsibility of the KMHC Local Public Health Team. Actions that each contact should take is dependent on many factors. For this reason, the Task Force and the Testing Site cannot provide any information regarding actions to take should a community member have medical questions regarding COVID-19. We would like to reassure you that our KMHC Public Health Team is trained and ready to respond to the needs of the community to assist in decreasing the risk of transmission of the virus. They have the community’s health and well-being at heart and can be trusted to provide you with the right information at the right time.

For your information, here are the steps that take place when a positive case is identified in Kahnawake:

  1. Laboratory contacts individual to advise of positive case
  2. KMHC Public Health Team is advised of identified case
  3. KMHC Public Health Team contacts the positive case (or family of positive case if case a minor)
  4. Investigation takes place regarding contacts of positive case.  All information is CONFIDENTIAL
  5. Variables used to assess contact: timeline of symptoms, contact with or without protection, time and space.
  6. Depending on analysis, KMHC Public Health will recommend actions for contacts deemed low, moderate or high risk.
  7. Each of these contacts will be contacted by KMHC Public Health Team
  8. Please answer your telephone even if you no not recognize the caller number
  9. If you have not been contacted by the KMHC Public Health Team then you can be assured that you were not considered at risk.
The Task Force wishes to remind the community that we need to work together as a team: social distancing, hygiene and masks are absolute necessities. The Task Force remains committed to keeping our vulnerable population safe during the pandemic.
