Hydro Quebec call for Bids for Tree Services

10/30/2020

The Lands Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform local contractors that Hydro Quebec will be putting out a bid for a Kanien’kehá:ka Contractor to clear nearly five acres of trees and brush along access paths on the North Wall (see map) during the month of January 2021, as part of the Hydro Line 2 Dismantlement project.

The downed trees will be placed where community members will have access to them for use as firewood. Most of the trees to be cleared are ash (dying or already dead due to the Emerald Ash Borer infestation) and poplar. For this reason, the wood should not be transported anywhere else for use, such as Tioweró:ton.

There are many other tree species in the area, but most of them will not need to be cut for the project. There is a reforestation plan in place, which will occur once the dismantlement has been completed. Details of this plan will be provided to the community shortly.

The trees need to be cleared for access and safety reasons in order to transport heavy equipment for the dismantlement of Line 2. All necessary mitigation measures have been considered to ensure minimal impact to the environment. For further information please contact the Lands Unit at 450-638-8244.
