MCK Governance Project Community Engagement Report released

12/01/2020

The Mohawk Council of Kahnaw:ke (MCK) wishes to inform Kahnawakehr:non that the Governance Project Community Engagement Report (the Report) has been completed and is now available for public viewing.

The Governance Project is an initiative that was created to review and strengthen the effectiveness and accountability of the elected Council of Chiefs. It focuses on the current policies, regulations, legislation, and other governance documents. The main goal is to provide new and enhanced systems and structures for the functioning of the Council of Chiefs and to assist in rebuilding relations between the leadership of the MCK and community members that ensure accountable, sound, and responsible government.

The Report contains information gathered from engagement sessions that took place from December 2019 to this past September. These included family group, workgroup, and public information sessions, along with individual conversations.

The Report has been presented to the Council of Chiefs and is available to the public. The full Report, as well as a summarized version, are available on the public documents page of Kahnawake.com. The project team (Taiaiake Gerald Alfred and Jessica Lazare) will discuss the Report on the Tetewath:ren Talk Show on K1037 on Thursday, 3 Tsothhrha/December at 12:10pm.

Wed like to thank Taiaiake, Jessica, and the Advisory Group for their diligence and hard work on this important project, said Ietsnhaienhs Kahsennenhawe Sky Deer, who, along with Ietsnhaienhs Tonya Perron, is responsible for the Governance Portfolio for the MCK. Building better and more accountable governance structures cant be accomplished without input from the main stakeholders the people of Kahnaw:ke.
