The Kahnawà:ke Labor Office (KLO) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) is pleased to release the results of the recent Mohawk Self Insurance (MSI) survey, which took place over a six-week period earlier this fall.
The survey was developed to determine the opinion of community members on declaring MSI as a mandatory benefit for all Kahnawa′kehró:non who work in the Territory. PlanIT Consulting & Communications was commissioned to conduct the survey.
The results show that overall, 71% of respondents strongly agreed that MSI should be implemented by all employers. Currently, only 51% are covered. Community consultation, accommodation for small businesses and more public information on the program were identified concerns from respondents. Generally, these are important areas that were identified as needing to be addressed should MSI coverage be made mandatory in Kahnawà:ke.
“We are pleased with the feedback we received from the survey,” said Director of KLO, Oliver Montour. "These invaluable concerns will help us further develop the MSI program around the needs and realities of our community."
In coming months, the KLO will use the feedback collected to ensure changes to the program are viable. Please note that making MSI mandatory would require the creation of a law that must be passed using the Community Decision making Process.
The survey results are posted at www.kahnawake.com/surveys.
